

One of a series of structures at the front of the Great Aten Temple. When the temple was abandoned it was in the process of being repaired. Normally they
were thickly coated with gypsum. Their purpose is not yet firmly established, but there are good reasons for thinking that they provided places for the prepara-
tion of the dead.
Archaeologist Mary Shepperson records one of the burials at the South Tombs Cemetery. Most burials had been wrapped in a protective sleeve made from
sticks bound together.
